Two popular and well-researched herbs: Garlic and Lavender

The following is not medical advice.

The Origin of Garlic

Garlic is an ancient herb native to Siberia that is now found throughout the world. It has remained popular for over 5000 years, dating all the way back to the creation of the Egyptian pyramids! Although an aromatic used for its strong flavor, the perceived health benefits must have added to its popularity. In the early 1700s, gravediggers in France believed the herb would shield them from the plague, so they added crushed garlic to their wine. Soldiers in World War I and II used garlic to as an antiseptic for infections and to prevent gangrene from forming.

Garlic in the Present

Today, garlic is consumed in herbal formulas, teas, food, and beverages.  It is known to improve many conditions related to the blood system and heart. The main active ingredient in garlic is a chemical called allicin. Some of the conditions that garlic improves include atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries), high blood pressure, low blood pressure, and heart disease. Garlic is used to relieve other more common ailments such as fever, stomach ache, cough, congestion, asthma, joint pain, stress, and fatigue.

Lavender

Another, perhaps even more popular herb, is the lavender flower. The plant is native to the mountainous regions of the Mediterranean and grows in the US, Australia, and southern Europe. Its name comes from the Latin word “lavare” which means ‘to wash.’ Lavender may have warranted its name due to its frequent use in water baths to cleanse the spirit as well as the body. It is an ingredient frequently found in sachets, soaps, and shampoos because of the additional benefit of its lovely, fresh, and calming scent.

Benefits of Lavender

However, the benefits of lavender extend well beyond its topical use! Like garlic, the ingested herb is used as relief for many common ailments. Lavender is used for mood disorders like anxiety and depression, as well as digestive conditions like vomiting, nausea, upset stomach, and gas. Research has suggested that lavender is so powerful, that even inhaling the smell of lavender will produce sedative, soothing effects.
