Damiana is a small shrub that produces aromatic flowers that smell a bit like chamomile and produces fruit that tastes like figs. It is native to the Americas and the Caribbean and is often used to make liqueurs in Mexico. Damiana margaritas are popular in the los Cabos region of Mexico and some say it was one of the ingredients in the original margarita. It was also one of the ingredients in Pemberton's French Wine Coca, a medicinal beverage made by John Stith Pemberton in the 1800's.
