Turmeric originated in Southeast Asia and is related to ginger and cardamom. It is a very popular spice in India, Pakistan and the Middle East. Turmeric gives a wonderful yellow color to many curries and is even used to dye fabric. In medieval Europe, turmeric was often called "Indian saffron" because it was used as a substitute for real saffron, which was extremely expensive at the time.
