Peppermint is a very popular herb that has been enjoyed for centuries. It was first discovered in the 1700's and is a hybrid of the watermint and spearmint plants. Peppermint is used primarily to flavor confections and ice cream and toothpaste but is also added to some soap and skin care products.
Peppermint is now found all over the world and grows best in shaded, moist environments. Since it is a hybrid, the plant is sterile and can only be spread by the roots growing out from the main plant. Peppermint gets much of it's flavor from it's high menthol content.
