Nutmeg is traditionally used in pumpkin pies, gingerbread, cookies and many savory dishes. It is also used to help flavor eggnog and mulled wine. It was once an extremely costly seasoning. Nutmeg is also an important component of many Asian, Indian and  Middle Eastern foods.

The nutmeg tree is native to the Banda Islands (also known as the Spice Islands) near Indonesia and it takes twenty years for a new tree to become fully productive. The spice "mace" is made from red colored outer layer of the nutmeg seed. Nutmeg is the only tropical fruit that produces two different spices!
